This is AIK Handball

Our sports association Allmänna Idrottsklubben, commonly going by the abbreviated name of "AIK", saw light in 1891 in the very centre of Stockholm, Sweden. AIK is the biggest sportsclub in Sweden with approximately 16.000 members. The King of Sweden , His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf, is AIK´s patron and first member of Honour.

Initially, track and field sports were on the agenda, whereas football and ice-hockey were introduced in 1896 and 1921, respectively. Presently, AIK is carrying on activities in the following sports: football, ice-hockey, bandy, bowling, golf, indoor bandy and handball.

Handballing activities started in fact in 1943, but was dormant during the period 1980 -2003. The Solna-based handball club Väntorp/Solna HK merged into AIK in 2003, thereby becoming and constituting AIK's handball section. AIK won the Swedish handball championship in 1951, and count among its players also 1958 world champion Lennart Ring. By the way, the world champion title was earned in AIK's original shirt, but that's quite another story... The handball section houses some 300 "working members", divided into 20 teams, 13 of which are youth teams. Activities are being conducted in the town of Solna.

AIK are one of three organizers of the Eken Cup, which is the biggest outdoor handball tournament in the world played on grass. In the 2005 tournament about 10,000 players will participate together with a large number of managers. Our senior women's and men's teams, respectively, play in "Division 1", i.e., just below Sweden's top division. During the 2004 - 2005 season, however, our senior men's team played qualifying matches in the so-called "Allsvenskan" trying to reach Sweden's top division.

Over the past 30 years AIK have been co-operating and interchanging activities with German club VTZ of Zweibrücken, located in the Saarland-Pfalz region in south-west Germany, including among other things annual gatherings.
